Care and support
in a home from home

Our aim in each of the homes has always been to provide a happy environment as much like a normal home as possible.

Aims and Objectives

  1. Our aim is to meet the needs of the whole person, physically, psychologically, socially and spiritually. Promoting independence for all our residents whilst, maintaining a safe environment for all.Our main objective is for our homes to become a forever home for the individual.
  2. We support our residents choices, freedom, dignity, independence and participation in planning their individual care needs, in whichever communication form is necessary. Our residents are encouraged to maintain their preferred lifestyles in their home environment.
  3. To our organisation ‘quality care’ means residents satisfaction and therefore our care provision is Person Centred and monitored through quarterly resident reviews, satisfaction surveys both for residents and families. Measuring quality throughout our homes is ongoing and managed through staff meetings, ongoing audits, assessments, action planning, implementation and evaluation. We pride ourselves in the ability to adapt and grow with our residents’ potential change in needs and level of support so their home is truly a home for life.

Castlehaven Care Limited was first opened July 4th 1985 under the former name of Castlehaven Residential Homes.. We are now 38 years old as a family run organisation which is currently made up of 8 settings based on 2 different sites in and around Bishops Castle. We aim to provide a high quality of lifetime care supporting adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities. We are committed to respecting our residents’ individuality, independence, confidentiality and privacy. One of our sites, The Pines, is also able to offer respite due to higher staff ratio and the environment. We take pride in the fact we are able to retain our staff in such a rural part of Shropshire. This is vital in providing continuity in care for our residents. Some staff have even completed 30 years in our employment.

These 8 settings have naturally evolved through careful assessments and change in individuals’ needs. Very importantly we have been sensitive to creating a home environment where individuals have similar abilities and great consideration has been taken to individual preferences and choices. This in turn maintains a ‘fairer environment’ in each home where everyone can participate and have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

High Trees is registered for 16 people in total and consists of 2 properties on 1 location and a rented property 5 minutes walk away under the umbrella of High Trees registration. High Trees, Nova House and Tregarron Bungalow. High Trees is an 8 bedded house although only 6 are utilised. 4 rooms on the first floor and 2 on the ground floor for residents with mobility issues. The property has been adapted and used as a residential home since 1987. There is a large car park at the front of the property to access both homes. A large lawned area is shared by both homes both with their own patio areas. Fortunately the grounds were big enough for us to develop a purpose built additional property, Nova House, which opened in 2004 because the needs of some of our residents had changed. Nova House has two individual 4 bedded units. These units have been designed to meet the needs of individuals with mobility issues and have a lift for access to both levels.

Tregarron Bungalow, a 2 bedroomed detached house with beautiful gated gardens, is but a 5 minute walk from High Trees location and is on long term rent to our organisation from the local GP. Knowing these two residents for many years as their GP, this has allowed us to adapt the bungalow to the needs of the 2 individuals who found it difficult to continue living communally. One resident came from Nova House and one resident came from High Trees. They both were at crisis and at risk of placement breakdown. Adopting a core and cluster staffing approach enabled us to continue to support the individuals with their preferred staff, continuing to access the community and join in High Trees activities.

High trees and Tregaron’s location is on the outer perimeter of Bishops Castle, a beautiful market town in South Shropshire overlooking the wonderful Shropshire hills. They are within a 5 minute walk or a 2 minute drive from local shops and services with the community. All our residents are able to access a very inclusive town supported individually.

The Pines is located ½ a mile outside of Bishops Castle with a very convenient disabled pathway that leads from Bishops Castle town centre across fields to the outside of the property. This provides safe and easy access by foot/wheelchair for all our residents. The property is set in an acre of outstanding beauty which comprises a large lawn/gardens and raised flower beds ideal for summer bbqs and celebrations. We also have a vegetable plot and polytunnel so residents can partake in the growing of fruit and vegetables and general upkeep as part of activities. There is a large car park and a smaller contained garden with patio area and lawn. The property comprises 2 buildings. The main building has been divided up into 2 units by a magnetic door. The larger part, ‘The Pines House,’ has 7 bedrooms 2 of which are on the ground floor with en-suite wet rooms to meet the needs of residents with mobility issues. The property is DDA compliant and there is a lift to the first floor where there are a further 5 bedrooms, 4 with en-suite and a large bathroom with jacuzzi bath and shower. The other unit, ‘The Pines Unit’, is a 4 bedded unit developed to meet the needs of residents with behaviours that challenge, enabling us to support them individually creating a safer environment for all. The unit is all on one level and with 2 wet rooms 1 with a jacuzzi bath. The garden to this unit is contained with a digital lock on the gate, although the gardens on the property are accessed by all with individual support. The second building comprises 2 additional single bedded units which are at the rear of the main building. These are known as ‘The Pine Cones’. They each consist of a living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. The Cones were developed for 2 individuals whose needs were unable to be met in the communal living arrangement at The Pines Unit. They were developed for their individual needs providing a core staff team allowing them to live the rest of their lives in a safe environment with no impact on the other residents, yet with all the benefits of communal interaction and the activities provided throughout the other homes. These are known as Pine Cone 1 & 2.

The newest adaptation is in the form of a beautiful 2 bedroomed modern static caravan. Again we are having to think outside the box to accommodate an individual who was new to our service in  December 2022. Over the year,  with extensive support from outside agencies, we have come to the conclusion that the communal environment can not meet his needs due to the vulnerability of the other residents. Rather than give notice and cause the individual extensive upset because the placement has broken down, we will continue to meet his needs in this caravan at The Pines location. The fact he is happy and voicing that he does not want to move being on the same grounds is the perfect solution. We have had clinical recommendations from IST and full support of their family. We can continue to meet their needs by adopting the core and cluster approach to support this individual in this temporary accommodation. Having the same staff will give them security and reassurance enabling a reduction in the current risk to the other residents in The Pines Unit. This will be until it is viable and approved to build something similar to The Pine Cones next year. The caravan comprises a living room, kitchen, bathroom and 2 bedrooms. It has central heating and has been adapted for wheelchair use and therefore spacious with sliding doors at regulated door widths. It is positioned to the side of The Pines Unit and the individual will be supported 1-1 24/7 but again be able to join in group activity and celebrations, continuing their community presence with their individual support. We have yet to have this agreed by CQC and commissioners but preparation has been made whilst awaiting approval.
